Pharmacotherapy is often, if not always, the foundation for the successful treatment of Bipolar Disorder in any age group. However, non-compliance with treatment often interferes with successful outcome.
Pharmacological treatment should always be considered part of a comprehensive therapeutic approach. This requires addressing issues pertaining to lifestyle (sleep hygiene, exercise, diet, socialization) as well as school interventions (addressing learning disabilities and problems with executive functioning), and psychoeducation. The ongoing education of patients and families is crucial in creating a collaborative relationship between health providers and patient.
